Silver start for Laugher and Mears

Olympic champions Jack Laugher and Chris Mears sealed silver in the Men’s 3m Synchro at the opening leg of the FINA/NVC Diving World Series in Beijing.

The British pair who train together in Leeds collected their first international medal of the 2017 season amongst a strong international field on the first day of competition in the Chinese capital.

Their highest scoring dive came in the penultimate round of the final, a Forward 2 ½ Somersaults 3 Twists, which cemented their podium position.

A final score of 427.98 earned Laugher and Mears the silver medal and they were joined on the podium by China (450.39) and Russia (419.25) who took gold and bronze respectively.

Other British divers in action on day one included Olympic Bronze medallists Tom Daley and Goodfellow, they finished fourth in the Men’s 10m Synchro with a score of 409.59.

Women’s 10m Synchro pairing of Lois Toulson and Tonia Couch finished with a score of 294.72 and ranked fifth overall.

New Women’s 3m Synchro pairing of Grace Reid and Katherine Torrance also finished fifth with a score of 275.88.

The FINA/NVC Diving World Series will take place at the Chinese National Aquatics Centre in Beijing from 3 to 5 March.
