Strong team of divers head to World Juniors

14 Nov 2016

Olympian Lois Toulson and European medallist Matty Lee lead a team full of promise that are heading to the FINA World Junior Championships in Kazan, Russia.

The 13-strong team will be competing in all events across the seven-day competition which runs from 28 November – 4 December.

Toulson, who made her Olympic debut this summer, will be competing in the Platform and will be up against fellow Brit Shanice Lobb.

Lee has gained a lot of experience competing on the senior international circuit and knows the pool well after competing there at the World Championships in 2015. He will be in the Platform and 3m Synchro.

Commonwealth finalist Matthew Dixon will be taking to the top board and facing up against Lee in the Platform.

Scarlett Mew Jensen and Emily Martin are making their British debut at a major competition, and will be looking to learn from their experienced team-mates.

Team Leader Julian Bellan is excited by the strength of the team and believes they have what it takes to produce results against the best in the world.

“In Olympic years the event normally takes place late September/early October,” Bellan said. “This provides challenges falling outside of the normal competition season, however the lateness of the event in November/ December is very new for our team. To help with preparation the British team has already had a pre-camp in Leeds.

“The signs are promising from our competition simulations with the divers showing great physical and technical readiness. In 2012 Tom Daley battled it out with Chen Aisen, the Rio Olympic Champion, so we can expect to see the very best diving and quite possibly future Olympic medallists in action.

“The World Junior Diving championships for Diving is a biannual event that brings together the very best divers of 18 years and under. By its very nature the event will see not only emerging talent but also established divers who have already experienced senior international competitions.

“Previously divers such as Tom Daley, Jack Laugher, Daniel Goodfellow, Alicia Blagg, Grace Reid and Hannah Starling came into the World Juniors and performed with distinction. In Kazan a mix of experience with strong athletes Matty Lee and Lois Toulson who will be joined by a strong team of divers who have already stamped their name in Europe in junior and senior competitions.”
