What the judges are looking for: Divers explain

25 Jan 2018

If you are planning to tune into the live stream of the British Diving Championships this weekend, but not sure how the judges come to their scores, fear not! Our divers are here to help.

Here some of our best divers explain what makes a good score, and what they are trying to achieve with each dive:

Tom Daley: Pointed toes

“Although most people just look out for the big splashes the judges are looking for pointed toes.

“If people don’t have their toes together and pointed when they hit the water the judges will mark them down.

“So have a look at people’s feet.”

Ross Haslam: Finesse

“The better the dive looks in the air, the bigger the score!”

Freddie Woodward: Jump height

“The higher you can jump off the board, the easier the dive is going to be and the more impressive the dive will be to the judges.”

Jack Haslam: Rip entry

“Probably the most obvious thing the judges are looking for is the rip entry.

“That’s where you go into the water with as little amount of splash as possible.”

Jordan Houlden: Shape quality

“The better your shape, the faster your spin and the better you can make it.”
