In what was a two horse race the lead passed between the Chinese and British pairs over the last four rounds, with the Olympic and Commonwealth Champions eventually edged out of the gold medal position in the last round.

Laugher and Mears’ best dive came in the fifth round – a forward 2 1/2 somersaults, 3 twists in pike position - scoring 91.26. Their final dive was a forward 4.5 somersault in tuck position scoring 70.68. The same finale dive for Xie and Cao scored 88.92.

It was also a 22 point improvement for the Brits on their World Championship performance in Budapest last year.

Earlier in the day Robyn Birch and Lois Toulson secured semi-final places in the women’s platform competition, taking place tomorrow.

On day one of the competition in Wuhan, China, Birch finished eighth in the Mixed platform event with Noah Williams.
