British medalists back in the pool at Glasgow 2018

8 Aug 2018

British medalists Kat Greenslade and Ben Proud were back in competition this morning after gold and silver success last night.

Greenslade, part of the 4x200m women's freestyle relay, was back in action in the 200m backstroke. The medical student was involved in a fast heat that saw her finish eighth, but still qualified for the semis as the 13th quickest.

Ben Proud then finished joint fastest in the 50m freestyle, tied with Greece's Kristian Gkolomeev

"Normally you get a day off between the two events, but it's definitely good practice to go straight back into the heats.

"Obviously I would like to have had a bit more time to think about it and prepare, but we do train for these back to back performances.

"I handled it quite well, feel good and hopefully have another 24 hours recovery so I can put a good performance in tomorrow night.

"The whole thing was slightly below what I'd normally do, because I wasn't too worried about being the fastest seed."

James Guy who was narrowly edged out of the medal positions in last night's 200m freestyle, was back in action in the 100m butterfly, qualifying second fastest. Jacob Peters, just weeks away from his 18th birthday, missed the chance to progress coming in in 21st position.

He said: "Last night was probably one of the fastest ones I've ever done - it is what it is.

"Most guys feel better in the evening than they do in the morning, so I'm going to go back, get my legs up and get a massage. My legs are pretty sore from last night."

Commonwealth champion Sarah Vasey was in action in the 50m breaststroke, against British Record holder Imogen Clark with both comfortably making it through to to night's semis in third and joint fifth position.

Alys Thomas, the 200m butterfly bronze medalist, completed her individual programme of racing at this meet in the 50m butterfly - missing out on the semi-finals, along with fellow Brit Charlotte Atkinson.

The action resumes at Tollcross International Pool in Glasgow from 4.30pm.
