Jack Burnell has taken gold in the FINA World Cup race in Lake Balaton in what is the Brit’s final 10km race ahead of the World Championships.

Burnell had been part of the leading pack in the first two laps of the race and lay in second place at the half way point.

The National Centre Loughborough swimmer made his move after the third lap and broke for the lead.

Burnell sprinted for the win through the closing stages of the race to touch in first place and take the gold.

The Brit came into this race off the back of winning the 10km race in Cozumel, Mexico in May.

"I am extremely happy with the win today," Burnell said. "I have now got great momentum going into the World Championships at the end of July. I just need to use this to get the job done in Kazan. That'll involve going back to working hard in training and I really want to thank my support team today that helped me get to the top of that podium."

Caleb Hughes was up with the leading four until the final 200m when he had his goggles and cap pulled off and he fell back to 17th. Tom Allen finished in 22nd while Dan Fogg finished in 29th place after suffering a kick to the ribs in the early stages he fought to finish the race.

Olympic silver medallist Keri-anne Payne fought hard through the final lap of the race to come back from sixth place to bronze.

The women’s 10km race saw a much tighter leading pack than the men’s race and Payne was within the pack for the first three laps of the race.

It was in the final lap that she made her fight for the podium. She looked strong as she made her move and touched the board in third place and claimed her position on the podium.

Danielle Huskisson finished in 12th place after putting in a promising performance.
