Adam Peaty secured a gold medal and a new European record in the 100m breaststroke at the LEN European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen.

Peaty's time of 55.94 secured his first short course gold, with team mate Ross Murdoch racing to a PB of 57.51.

He said: "`That kind of race was a tussle, I knew it was going to be a tussle in that last 25, but if anyone is next to me - I'm the man to get it done.

"It's great to kind of carry that experience as an athlete as this is my third ever final in short course.

"Compared to long course I've had hundreds so this kind of experience to me is vital and is going to help me get even faster on the long course."

And after the ceremony Peaty gave his medal to a young fan in the crowd.

Ben Proud had to battle it out in a heat, semi and final all in one day to claim his medal in the 50m butterfly before earning himself a bronze with a time of 22.44.

He said: "It's exciting being in a race with a bunch of fast guys. I had a fast time in the semi finals, but I still thought I could move it on.

"Going into the final my quads were feeling really heavy but at the same time everyone else in the Final has also had to swim three times today.

"Obviously it would have been nice to come away being European Champion - I feel good about my race in the semi final and I still think there's more there and I think I can go faster."

Duncan Scott qualified for the final of the 100m freestyle tomorrow night, winning his semi final and recording the third fastest time of 46.92.

Kathryn Greenslade came fifth in the 200m freestyle race, having qualified in the same position during the heats earlier in the day.

Charlotte Atkinson  also improved on her PB in the 100m Butterfly semi-final with a time of 57.61, coming in fifth.
