Guy defends British 200m butterfly title

1 Mar 2018

James Guy has successfully defended his British title in the 200m butterfly at the EISM inc. British Championships.

The Bath University swimmer beat Germany’s Ramon Kunert and Alexander Kunert to take the title for a second year, with Thomas Paine from the City of Manchester the second fastest Brit.

Guy said: “It’s nice to come here and race as part of my preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

“It’s great to win but I’m just thinking of long term goals – Commonwealth Games, the Europeans and in the long term, the Olympics in Tokyo.”

On the opening day’s competition at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh Dan Jervis took the first medal of the day winning the 1500m men’s freestyle, quickly followed by the University of Edinburgh’s Kat Greenslade taking the title in the 200m freestyle.

It was a day for rising stars with junior Nicholas Pyle from Newcastle beating last year’s title holder Chris Walker-Hebborn in the 50m backstroke and 18-year-old Lewis Burras from Southport winning the 100m freestyle – his second swim of the day within the European Juniors qualification time.

Aberdeen Performance’s Hannah Miley took the gold in the Women’s 400m IM, with Aimee Wilmott taking the silver medal and Abbie Wood the bronze.

Miley said: “I’m happy and tired – but I took the attitude go hard or go home.

“I know this is going to be a hard meet, but the atmosphere here is great.”

Harriet Jones from City of Cardiff took the Women’s 100m butterfly title, narrowly beating last year’s champion Alys Thomas representing Swansea Aquatics. Emily Large  from Newcastle set a new youth record of 59.60 in the race.

The 50m women's title went to Edinburgh University’s Lucy Hope followed by the skins event shortly after.

The action continues tomorrow from 8.45am on our YouTube channel.
