Hibbott, Litchfield and sprinters eye up Tokyo targets on day three

16 Apr 2021

More of Britain’s aspiring Tokyo Olympians set themselves up for shots at consideration times on morning three of the British Swimming Selection Trials in London.

Holly Hibbott booked her place in the centre lane for the Women’s 400m Freestyle, taking it out from halfway onwards to finish clear of the field. The Bath National Centre swimmer, formerly of Stockport Metro, will have her eyes fixed firmly on the Tokyo requirement standard of 4:05.96 when she returns to the pool later.

Max Litchfield also looks well placed to go under the consideration time in the Men’s 400m Individual Medley when the finals take place later on Friday, after putting together a controlled swim in the morning heats. The Loughborough National Centre man was barely a second outside the Tokyo requirement standard to kick off day three at the London Aquatics Centre, with Jacob Greenow of Bath University qualifying second and Charlie Hutchison placing third.

A mere two hundredths of a second separated Alys Thomas and Laura Stephens in the Women’s 200m Butterfly heats, the former just getting the edge on her rival from Plymouth Leander.

Both will be looking to get under the Olympic consideration time in what should be an intriguing final, while Emily Large (Bath National Centre) will also be in contention after placing third in the heats.

The Men’s 100m Freestyle could prove to be one of the showpieces of the entire meet after a breathless set of heats saw five of the top six qualifiers for the final clocking new personal bests.

The irrepressible Duncan Scott led the way, with Tom Dean, Matthew Richards, Joe Litchfield, Jacob Whittle and Cameron Kurle all following with their fastest-ever swims across the two intense laps of the pool. That final will not be one to miss.

The morning session was rounded out with the Men’s 200m Breaststroke, an event that saw Rio 2016 Olympian Ross Murdoch and James Wilby – pre-selected for the Tokyo squad – leading the way in their respective heats, the pair both laying the foundations to post some quick times this evening.
