Marathon sized field for open water swimmers

Britain’s marathon swimmers faced one of the largest ever fields at the second leg of the LEN European Open Water Cup in Gravelines, France.

The men’s competition had 116 swimmers taking part – almost double the usual amount of entrants – with Jack Burnell securing sixth place with a time of 01:44:28,30 over the 10k distance.

Germany’s Florian Wellbrock claimed a surprise win in the event breaking away and finishing with a 12 second advantage, ahead of Olympic and World Champion Ferry Weertman from the Netherlands.

The women’s race, made up of 92 athletes, saw an 11th place result for Alice Dearing with a time of 01:55:48,00 and Danielle Huskisson touching out in 21st in 01:57:07,00.
