Open Water juniors impress in Germany

Britain’s elite junior open water swimmers continued to impress with strong swims in the German National Open Water Swimming Championships.

The team travelled to Hamburg as part of preparations for the European Junior Open Water Swimming Championships which start on 18 July in Zagreb, Croatia.

In the 10km Philippa Shuttleworth was the fastest junior and finished fourth overall. The Hatfield swimmer produced a strong swim to finish in 2:02:14.

Archie Mitchell (City of Sheffield) finished fifteenth in the men’s 10km.

Sophie Evans led the British swimmers in the women’s 5km race by taking second place. The Swansea swimmer completed the course in 59:46.41.

Alice Dearing (Royal Wolverhampton) finished just behind to take third place in a time of 1:00:38, with Harriet Rothwell (Ellsemere Titans) taking fifth place in 1:02:16.

There were also good swims in the men’s 5km race with Toby Robinson (Royal Wolverhampton) and Tom Nelson (Wirral Metro) taking fourth and fifth place with times of 56:17.87 and 56:32.82 respectively.

Tom Millburn (Cockermouth) finished ninth and Ashley Hogg (Winsford) was eleventh.

Open Water Swimming Lead Bernie Dietzig, said: “I’m really pleased with these results. It was a tough field with a lot of seniors competing. The athletes showed a great deal of presence and raced well in tough conditions.”
