Open Water Juniors prepare for World Champs

29 Aug 2014

Britain’s elite open water junior athletes are making final preparations before heading to Hungary for the FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships.

Originally scheduled to be held in Eilat, Israel at the end of August, the rearranged event will take place from 5-7 September at Balatonfϋred, Lake Balaton.

The team of eight includes Sophie Evans who won silver in the women’s youth 5km race at the European Junior Open Water Swimming Championships in July.

The 15-year old Swansea Aquatics swimmer said: “This will be my biggest event so far so I’m a bit nervous but am also really excited to be competing.

“I was really happy with my performances at the German Open and the European Juniors and it would be great to end the season with another podium.

“At the beginning of the year I would never have expected my season to have gone so well. I’ve really enjoyed the challenge and excitement of open water swimming as lots can change in a race and it’s about making the right choices at the right time.

“I’ve been doing a mixture of pool and sea sessions during my training to make sure I am prepared for next week and am looking forward to seeing what I can do at the World Junior Championships.”

Joining Evans will be Alice Dearing who competed in the Berlin European Championships, as well as Ellena Jones and Tom Millburn who won the 3km and 2km titles at the British Gas ASA National Championships.
