Adam Peaty won his fourth consecutive 100m Breaststroke British title in Edinburgh tonight.
The Olympic and World Champion convincingly won the title with last night’s 200m winner James Wilby in silver medal position and Ross Murdoch in bronze.
He used the opportunity to pass on advice to the younger swimmers at the meet, saying: “A race is a race for me, and it’s been the same since I was a 14-year-old kid.
“Any 14-year-olds out there racing, just go for it, honestly. I do exactly the same thing now as I was doing back then – just go, give it everything you’ve got and when you get out the water, leave nothing behind.
“That counts in heats and finals – I’m not a ‘take it easy in the heats’ guy. You can’t afford to take it easy in the heats, you will be beaten out the race.
“It’s all about mental toughness and being fastest.”
It was a day of solid young performances on the third day of the Edinburgh International Swim Meet inc. British Swimming Championships 2018.
Junior Tom Dean of Maidenhead Swimming Club won the Men’s 200m Individual Medley final, smashing the European Junior qualification time by three seconds and leading the race at every stage.
He said: “I knew I had to get my stroke rate up on the backstroke – I really had to pick that up then carry the momentum through for the rest of the race.”
David Cumberlidge came out on top of a closely fought 50m Free Final, just pipping junior Lewis Burras to second place. However, in the skins event, the result was reversed.
Eighteen-year-old Brodie Williams from Millfield School took the 200m Backstroke Final, with Loughborough University’s Luke Greenbank picking up the silver and City of Cardiff’s Xavier Castelli in the bronze medal position.
Williams said: “I’m happy to get there, it was obviously a hard race but pretty happy to come away with the title.
“I can’t celebrate as I’ve got the 400m IM tomorrow so I’ve got to get ready for that and then after maybe have a little bit of time off.”
Holly Hibbott from Stockport Metro picked up her second British title of the weekend after last night’s 800m free title taking the 400m gold.
She said: “I’m really pleased with that swim again, it’s hard to race fast at the minute as training is tough. But I’m really pleased.
“I’m just fine tuning everything I’ve done so far this year and training hard so that when I get to the big meets I can race hard.”
Hibbott wasn’t the only double medallist this week – the University of Edinburgh’s Lizzie Simmonds followed up her 200m backstroke success with victory in the 100m event. Beating Kathleen Dawson into second place and Jess Fullalove into bronze medal position.
City of Cardiff swimmer Chloe Tutton also completed the double taking the 200m Breaststroke following on from last night’s 100m win. And after being surprised by his 400m freestyle victory last night Jay Lelliott completed the double with the 800m title.
City of Cardiff’s Harriet Jones completed the day three action winning the 50m Fly Final..
