Willis leads the way on day four in Glasgow

Former champion Andrew Willis led the nation’s elite into the Men’s 200m Breaststroke final after a fine swim on the fourth morning of the British Championships in Glasgow.

The National Centre, Bath swimmer looked strong in the penultimate heat of the Men’s 200m Breaststroke, qualifying for this evening’s final fastest with a spot in lane four.

Ross Murdoch (Stirling University) dominated his heat from start to finish meaning he will also return to the pool this evening for the final. City of Derby’s Adam Peaty, fresh from his 100m breaststroke title, topped the final heat to secure a berth in the open final.

Eleven-time British 50m Freestyle champion Francesca Halsall (National Centre, Loughborough) showed her experience by topping the rankings in the 100m Freestyle and qualifying first for evening’s title decider.

Halsall was closely followed by Siobhan-Marie O’Connor after the National Centre, Bath swimmer controlled the final heat of the event to progress through and put herself in contention for the British title.

Harriet Cooper (City of Derby) concluded the top three and joins Halsall and O’Connor, helped Britain to the world 4x100m mixed medley relay title last year.

James Guy (Millfield School) returned to the pool after a British title on day one to finish first in the Men’s 100m Butterfly heats and his least preferred event.

Plymouth Leander’s Anthony James controlled his heat while Adam Barrett (National Centre, Loughborough) was second behind Guy with both making tonight’s final in second and third respectively.

Lizzie Simmonds (National Centre, Bath) showed her class to finish a body length ahead of the rest of her heat and leads the line up into tonight’s Women’s 200m Backstroke final.

Chloe Hannam (City of Peterborough) ranked second after the heats and will join Simmonds in final alongside the swimmer from Nottingham Leander Georgia Hohmann.

The final event of the morning was the Men’s 1500m Freestyle which saw Daniel Jervis (Swansea Aquatics) reaffirm is distance swimming ability. He goes fastest into tomorrow night’s championship title deciding swim.

Jervis will be flanked by Stephen Milne (Perth City) and Timothy Shuttleworth (Loughborough University) who finish in second and third after three heats of the 1500m.
