British Para-Swimming to return to Glasgow in 2016

17 Aug 2015

British Para-Swimming are returning to Glasgow for the British Para-Swimming International Meet next April which will be a vital competition on the road to the Paralympic Games.

Tollcross International Swimming Centre welcomed over 600 para-swimmers from around the world for the IPC Swimming World Championships in July and it will play an integral part in the qualifying process for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The competition, which runs from 23 – 27 April, will be the only selection meet for British Para-Swimming to make the ParalympicsGB team and will see athletes put themselves in contention for selection from their performances at the five-day competition.

National Performance Director Chris Furber said: “I’m delighted that we will be returning to TollCross International Swimming Centre for such an important event in our calendar. The pool holds some great memories for the Para-Swimming team after both the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the IPC World Championships in 2015.

“Having the British Para-Swimming International Meet as our one and only trials event for a place on the ParalympicsGB team in Rio makes the event extra special and we very much hope the local crowd can cheer on the swimmers to achieve their best performances”

Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor Archie Graham, said: "We are delighted to have been selected to host the British Para-Swimming International Meet ahead of the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

"Tollcross International Swimming Centre is one of the world's top swimming venues and recently played host to a hugely successful IPC Swimming World Championships.

"With qualification places for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games at stake, the British Para-Swimming International Meet will be a real showcase of the best the sport has to offer."

Paralympic, World, European and Commonwealth Champion Ollie Hynd: “Tollcross holds really special memories for me. To win medals at two major competitions in the same venue is something not many athletes get to do and to return to Glasgow in the aim of qualifying for my second Paralympics is really exciting.

“The support we receive when we compete in the venue is fantastic and I know that we will get the same support again.”
