Brits set for busy night on day five

17 Jul 2015

The British Para-Swimming team are set for a busy fifth night at the Glasgow 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships after nine swimmers progressed from the morning heats at Tollcross.

Oliver Hynd, Sascha Kindred, Ellie Simmonds and Tully Kearney were the most impressive for the Brits as they all qualified fastest in their respective events.

Hynd will be aiming for his second gold medal tonight, having already defended his SM8 200m Individual Medley title in Scotland, and the 20-year old set the standard with a 4:34.76 in the S8 400m Freestyle.

Kindred and Simmonds will both be aiming to defend their respective SM6 200m Individual Medley titles after booking lane four for their finals in 2:45.00 and 3:05.65 respectively.

Kearney will go for gold in the S9 100m Butterfly, qualifying fastest in 1:09.39 – just 0.22 seconds slower than her European record set in Tollcross last month.

Having won the first two World medals of her career on day four in Glasgow, 16-year old Alice Tai continued her form into day five with a confident heat swim in the S10 100m Butterfly, qualifying second fastest in 1:09.65.

Susie Rodgers also made it through her butterfly heats, touching in 38.67 to progress fourth fastest for the S7 50m Butterfly final.

Jessica-Jane Applegate and Thomas Hamer made smooth progress into their SM14 200m Individual Medley finals, having won silver and bronze respectively in the S14 200m Freestyle earlier in the week.

Applegate won her heat in 2:28.31 to qualify second fastest while Hamer lowered Jack Thomas’ British record with a 2:17.52 effort to progress third fastest. Scott Quin was also in action in the men’s event, missing out on the final as he placed 12th overall in 2:21.19.

Glasgow-born Andrew Mullen was the ninth Brit to make it through the heats on the day as he qualified fifth fastest in the S5 50m Freestyle.

The 18-year old, who has already won two silvers and a bronze at the Championships, touched in the second fastest time of his career with a 35.56 effort.
