The British Gas GBR Swimming Team returned to action at the London Aquatics Centre for National Paralympic Day and came away as victors in the battle against Europe.
Great Britain's swimmers got National Paralympic Day underway in style as they edged out a team of International swimmers in the first session of two in the pool at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Alice Tai, representing Great Britain, got the action underway with victory in the women's S9-10 100m backstroke and GB went on to eight of the 14 morning’s races as they took a 36 point lead from Europe into the afternoon session.
In front of a noisy crowd in the London Aquatics Centre, the International team claimed the final two relay races of the morning to narrow the gap at the halfway stage to 146 to 110.
In the afternoon session, a host nation 1-2-3 in the men’s 200m Individual Medley gave the crowd plenty to cheer about, as Ben Procter led home his GB team-mates Jack Thomas and Craig Harris, and just a few races later the women followed suit in the women’s 200m Individual Medley as Bethany Firth for GB took first place ahead of second-placed Jessica-Jane Applegate and third-placed Chloe Davies, all for GB.
The relay races provided a final opportunity for ticket-holders to get behind GB. A win for the International team in the women’s 34 point 200m Freestyle was followed by back-to-back wins for GB in the men’s equivalent and in the Mixed S14 200m Freestyle.
At the end of two sessions of fantastic swimming back in the London Aquatics Centre, the host nation was presented with the winning trophy, beating the International team by 292 points to 229.
