Mullen closes in on third medal of Glasgow 2015

Andrew Mullen will aim for his third medal of the Glasgow 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships after progressing strongly from his S5 50m Butterfly heat on day four at Tollcross.

Glasgow-born Mullen touched second in his heat behind Paralympic champion Daniel Dias to qualify third fastest overall.

Teenager Alice Tai also impressed in her main event, qualifying third fastest in the S9 100m Backstroke.

The 16-year old  clocked 1:09.23 to reach her first IPC Swimming World Championship final as the Netherlands’ Summer Mortimer led the way with a world record 1:05.86.

Hannah Russell and Ellie Simmonds were the other two Brits to qualify for finals on day four.

S12 world record holder Russell was sixth fastest, ‘swimming up’ in classification in the S13 400m Freestyle.

The 18-year old, who won S12 100m Backstroke silver last night, came home in 4:47.84.

Meanwhile, Simmonds came home in 36.49 to qualify sixth fastest in the S6 50m Freestyle as Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Mereshko led the way with a world record 34.45.
