Robinson named BBC Young SPOTY

15 Dec 2016

Paralympic Champion Ellie Robinson has beaten tough competition to be crowned BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2016.

At just 15-years old Robinson was one of the youngest members of ParalympicsGB in Rio and stole the nation's hearts with her first swim in the 50m Butterfly.

In her main event in Rio, Robinson came out in her Dry Robe and gained attention for her game face. She didn't disappoint and swam the race like her experienced team-mates and claimed the gold.

She also went on to take bronze in the 100m Freestyle beating her idol Ellie Simmonds in the final.

"It's just been such an amazing year," Robinson said. "This is just the icing on the cake to be honest. It's been a surprising year and I think it's all unexpected.

"I only really started swimming properly three years ago and it's gone so quickly and snowballed."

Previous aquatics winners include Tom Daley, Ellie Simmonds and Josef Craig.
