World Champion Steph Slater was named Disabled Sportswoman of the Year last night at the Sky Sports and Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Awards.

Slater competed in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games earlier this summer and won silver in the S8 100m Freestyle.

She later backed this performance up with seven gold medals and a world record at the IPC Swimming European Championships.

“I was totally blown away to have won the award as the other sportswomen who were shortlisted had achieved fantastic results this year too,” she said. “I just feel so honoured to be recognised and hope that I can inspire others out there too.

“I have loved being at the National Performance Centre and I want to thank my coaches Rob [Greenwood] and Graeme [Smith] but also my coaches at Preston and everyone for their continued support because I wouldn’t have won this without them.”
