World Record falls in Glasgow as swimmers continue prep

Day one of the Scottish National Swimming Championships saw a World Record for Bethany Firth in the Para-Swimming events as well as notable performances from swimmers preparing for the World Championships in Kazan.

Robbie Renwick and Stephen Milne all looked strong as they powered to victory on the opening day at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow.

Earlier in the afternoon Renwick may have found additional inspiration watching University of Stirling team-mate Duncan Scott win gold in 100m Freestyle at the European Games in Baku.

In the same event Renwick hit the front from the off and looked strong as he powered up the final 50m. He took from Perth City’s Stephen Milne while Jordan Hughes (University of Stirling) and Liam Tancock of Loughborough tied for bronze.

Speaking after the final Renwick said,

“I’m pleased with that. I’m still in a really heavy training block and have come into this meet unrested. There’s still about three more weeks of training to go before I taper ahead of the Worlds in Kazan.”

Aimee Willmott (London Aquatics) looked dominant in the 400m IM taking and took a deserved victory.

“I’m pleased with that.  I started really hurting as the race went on and I am just happy to have come through for the win,” said Willmott.

“There’s a lot of support here amongst the swimmers. We’re all still in a really hard block of training but we are doing our best to encourage each other to push through until we start resting up for the Worlds.”

Stephen Milne made a second trip to the podium wining gold in the 1500m Freestyle.

The country’s top Para-Swimmers are also in action fine tuning their final preparation ahead of the IPC Swimming World Championships.

Bethany Firth (ARDS) broke the S14 world record in the 200m Freestyle while Danielle Joyce broke the S15 World Record for 50m Backstroke.

Earlier in the day Lyndon Longhorne broke the SB3 British Record for 50m Breaststroke, while Tully Kearney (S9) and Alice Tai (S10) both broke their respective European Records in 100m Butterfly. Toni Shaw and Stephen Clegg both broke Scottish Records in 100 Butterfly and 100 Freestyle.
